Perkasie Addition – “Natural Solutions”

Before:

About this Project

Living on a highly traveled road in town, our customers desired a more private addition put on the hidden rear section of their home. They wanted to take advantage of as much natural light as possible, avoiding the dark and closed in feel of the existing back of their stone farmhouse. A prior addition had been built years earlier, which they now hoped to improve upon, in appearance and function. The entire project needed to stay within an established budget.

Construction began by opening the wall from the original addition. A cathedral ceiling of exposed beams was created, and skylights installed. New double hung windows were placed around the outside walls, inviting in naturel light. The focal point became the large arched window and French door, leading to an outside private patio. The entire addition and back of the house was newly sided to successfully join the old with the new.

To fulfill the varied requests and the disguising of a previously disliked addition while working within an established budget, presented some specific challenges. The addition was designed to avoid the use of collar beams running across the entire room assuring complete openness of space.  This was accomplished by engineering a ridge beam to hold the roof system intact. Insulating the ceiling caused a challenge, as the desire was to have oversized beams exposed for their beauty.  The owner also wanted to see natural wood between the beams without detecting any insulation.  Secondary roof was designed over top of the exposed ceiling hiding the foam insulation, giving the required R-value and having an area to fasten the roof shingles to. Warmth and clean wall look for furniture placement was a high priority, making the installation of radiant heat within the floors critical. Creating an arched patio to reflect the arched window was tediously succeeded through cutting the rectangular brick into precise angels. The multiple challenges were successfully met and tackled throughout the construction process.

Free from the hustle and bustle of the day, a year-round relaxation spot is found. Our happily satisfied customers have a private peace and quiet in their backyard escaped, as all their needs and desir3es were met.
